Subject: display illumination

I'm setting up a gallery wall in a hallway that's illuminated by track
lighting, and I'd like to know how much light is considered "standard"
for viewing photographs. I've seen lots of vague descriptions such as
"enough to see shadow detail" but I've got to believe that there's
something more precise. Anyone know? Thanks to whomever can help.
