It's a bit academic Sandy unless we can see what you are talking about.

Try tweaking the functions and see the results to get an idea of what each
function odes. BUT DO IT ON A COPY!!!!

I use Photoshop so I can't say what these other programmes are like to use.
I should image that they will perform the same function though. Best get a
good book and practise.
