Subject: Re: color modification

If you don't adjust saturation and brightness you don't get the S -> D
mapping. Instead you get hue(S) mapped to hue(D), which is quite
different. Consider trying to map a bright color with high saturation,
to a dark color with medium saturation. If you only do hue mapping the
color you end up with will be quite different from the color you had in
mind. For example, you might get something like a pastel pink instead
of maroon.

It sounds like this is an as-yet unsolved problem, and quite possibly
unsolvable because there is not enough information to work with.

I'm aware that background colors other than grays will complicate
things. I was wondering whether I could make this work for relatively
simple images.
