Well, 1280x1024 isn't exactly "very large" by today's standards. Even
lower-mid-range digital cameras routinely generate bigger ones.

You only run out of memory because you expand more of the image than
you have to. There's no need to compute the expanded view of those
parts of the image that won't fit on the screen anyway.
