I don't know that it qualifies as an "invention", because it is obvious in

the sense that anyone with high school algebra can independently derive it

once the optimization problem is seen as the goal (although the concept of

optimization is not itself typically broached at a high school level).

Perhaps the better questions are who first published it, or who was first

using it, perhaps casually. For example, the first Postscript engines of

the 1980s would likely have used it in the software, even though they did

not publish the mathematics. But even that is decades into the history of

Bezier applications.
