Thanks for answering everyone! Dave, I am starting to understand your
answer more now. I have foudn some interesting material from Sethian
(math.berkely.edu/~sethian) and ANU
(http://wwwrses.anu.edu.au/~nick/waves.html). There is even soem code
in that last one. It turns out (and I think Dave was trying to say
this), that oru problem can be viewed as a surface propagation through
a variable medium. In our case the variation is the slope fo the 3D
surface. Anyway, check out the animations on the last link. They are
superb. The first one shows exactly what the 2D projection of our
solution would be if the red areas are more steep and the purple areas
are more flat.
