Do you mean the difference between an image described as pixels and an
image described as geometry (lines, curves, ...)?
Such matters are sometimes discussed in documentation for programs
like ACD's Canvas or open source The GIMP.
Less helpful, but also of practical interest, is the W3C web standard
documentation for SVG, or a tutorial on it.
Otherwise this is such a broad question it's hard to know what would
be a useful answer.
