Johan,

barrel or pincushion distortion by camera lens can
be removed by a quadratic correction along a radius
in polar coordinates.

Higher order terms might be necessary for very
distorted images or the reverse effect (convex mirror).
The term 'gamma' belongs to gamma encoding for
colors, shouldn't be used in the context of geometrical
distortions.
