I believe the current engine is mimeTeX.
The current output is not very pretty, and matrices -- the workhorse
of computer graphics -- look especially bad.
Although the WikiTeX output is more attractive, it is also in the form
of images. These consume extra bandwidth, don't work well inline, and
don't scale. One of the goals of BlahTeX is to generate MathML output,
which is a much more satisfactory way to incorporate mathematical
content in a web page.
