if the polygon is planar then you can project, e.g., to xy/xz/yz plane
and use some standard planar point location algorithm (winding number,
ray-crossing), if polygon is not planar then it is ill defined i guess,
since we don't know the surface behaviour inside the polygon (it can be
picewise linear, smooth surface, etc.)
