Probably you are not experiencing color channel clipping then. ProPhoto RGB has a wider color gamut than aRGB, but I do not think the dynamic range is any greater and overexposure would be similar in both color spaces.
BTW, when evaluating exposure, I would turn off the auto features in ACR so you really know where you are exposing.
If you are aware of channel clipping, I have found the histogram to be a good guide to exposure if you populate the entire histogram. Personally, I wouldn't overdo it.
Of course, you can convert into any colorspace from raw, but many gurus such as Bruce Fraser and Micheal Reichman recommend ProPhoto 16 bit.
