The value I got for my Nikon D70 is very close to what Bruce got with his Canon. According to an interesting article by Thom Hogan, the ANSI standard is based on luminance and not reflectance, but it corresponds to a reflectance of 12%. If you are using an 18% Kodak gray card, you should add 1/2 stop to the meter reading. This is what I did for my D70 calibration. As another check, the pixel level in sRGB or aRGB should correspond to 118.
Many older meters (such as my old Gossen LunaPro) are calibrated for 18%.
