The Gossen allows placement, which is to my way of thinking, the preferred way. I routinely place values with my Luna-Pro F, with or without the spot attachment, which reads 7.5° or 15°. I see no conflict with similar use with digital, except perhaps, for the precision. If cameras behave like scanners, a slight placement of the highlight by as little as one bit off can blow it. So I always search for the brightest point and be sure the scanner is set 2 bits higher. A lot of messing with the camera though.
The Gossen gives you a number. What you do with it is your call.
Which Minolta meter are we talking about? Is there only one spot model? I have seen spotmeters which use indicator lights (Ugh!)
