It's not in any way a brand thing.
The Minolta F has two key capabilities that are doubtless shared by many other meters.
1.) 1-degree spot measurements
2.) Highlight and shadow measurements
It's the second capability that is really important here. Just metering the highlight with a spotmeter that tries to place it as 18% gray is (obviously) counterproductive.
I'm sure Gossen offers a meter with similar capabilities—the older LunaPro whose mention triggered this discussion just isn't one of them. Any spotmeter that calculates highlight exposure will work.
