Far be it from me to argue with Bruce who I hold in very high regard. Not wishing to sound too sycophantic but I just recently went from film to digital. I finally managed to get hold of your CR for CS2 book a few days ago and I can honestly say it is truly excellent. It gets across large amounts of complex material in an easily comprehensible manner - truly indispensible. In two days, my understanding of digital photography and Camera Raw has grown by orders of magnitude.
But surely if you meter on the highlights directly and use that reading you will underexpose most scenes. For example, in a landscape if you spot meter on the brightest part of the scene (clouds say), the ground will be underexposed. This is what you don't want to do seeing as you want to get as much of the scene into the highlight end of the spectrum.
