Adding to what Jeff has already written. Very often the only way that companies such as Adobe can decode the file format and get the Marker Notes, etc is by reverse engineering...take a shot, note the data, change something on the camera, take another shot, compare new data with original to see what if anything has changed, and so it goes on. Obvioulsy, Adobe are not the only ones doing this. Nevertheless, if it wasn't for Adobe and a small but very active group of privateers around the globe we the "Users" would be stuck with the development crumbs that Canon, Nikon et al do hand out to third parties.
