Basic photo 101, more sun requires cool corrections to retain a neutral white point (5500). Cooler light-shade-requires warmer corrections to have a neutral white point (6500). You've got your thinking cap on backwards....spin it around and learn how to use Camera Raw's corrections...
Camera Raw is using the numbers to correct for the white balance-to the right warms, to the left cools. Logically, the direction is somewhat arbitrary but the metafore makes sense once you quit trying to over-think it.
