Adjustment layers are only permanently applied when flattening the image. Therefore, you can convert an 8-bit file with adjustment layers to 16-bit, flatten, and gain the advantage. My suggestion is, it is only needed to convert to 16-bit before flattening adjustment layers. Just try it.
More colors? How so.
I´d like for a theoretical discussion, instead of wasting a lot of ink to research this issue by my own.
