One has to understand the basic behavior of the metering system, matrix or otherwise, but matrix type mechanisms take significantly longer to get acquainted with.
While I never actually shoot manual, I am constantly riding the compensation dial. One of the things I've had some time adapting to with Canon evaluative metering (1DsII) is that it doesn't take the whole image into account, only a certain portion of the center, which is not readily indicated in the viewfinder to my knowledge.
I also wish they had indicated the current metering pattern in the viewfinder. Why they left it out always puzzled me. Unfortunately it's not something you could get with a firmware upgrade. I guess they wanted to leave some reasons for upgrading to the next model ...
