Subject: Re: Exposure to the right and tone placement
We both mispoke regarding placement of the highlight tone at 4096. Twelve bits encompass 0..4095 for 4096 values.
When we convert from gamma 1.0 to 2.2 we lose tones. According to Bruce Lindboom's calculator, we start out with 4096 levels in a 12 bit gamma 1 capture, but end up with only 249 levels after conversion to gamma 2.2. What is your take on this loss?
Of course, this loss of tones makes exposing to the right even more important, but I would suggest that one should not clip important highlights to gain more shadow details. The situation is similar to what we faced with Kodachrome: expose for the highlights and let the shadows fall where they may--or use multiple exposures and HDR with Photoshop. (At this point, I expect Jeff Schewe to jump in and inform me that digital is different :) )
