metering for digital is difficult enough without adding the extra challenge
of adding a filter that changes the sensor's response. It's doable, it's
just not trivial.
The filter does not change the sensor response, but only the composition of the light falling on the sensor. Most sensors are optimized for daylight and the use of an 80A filter balances tungsten illumination closer to daylight.
True enough about the metering difficulties, but in some cases (such as with tungsten illumination), the results may be worth the trouble. Bjørn Rørslett mentions this in his just posted review of the Nikon D200 (see section on noise performance)
