Thanks to all who responded to my post, particularly Mark Shaffer with the link to the PhotoshopNews piece about digital blending. I installed the Dr. Brown Place-A-Matic script for Bridge it described, and it's great -- completely automates the process of putting RAW conversions at two different exposures into two different layers. Easy even for a newbie like me.
