I haven't been able to replicate the 300D problems either. I see subtle differences in the demosaicing between ACR 3.2 and 3.3, but no difference at all in color handling between ACR 2x and ACR 3x. I strongly suspect something else is going on here.
BTW, the Curve tab lets you control highlight detail to a degree that's unattainable with the sliders, and is useful for small tweaks to the quarter and threequarter tones independent of the brightness slider. (The contrast slider is always dependent on brightness.)
