Good point Michael! The improved fidelity (whether seen or not) is the result of adjusting the image prior to reducing the informational content by going from a high-bit capture to 8 bits. With so many authorities (e.g., Tim Grey) now contending that there is no visible advantage to working in 16 bits given the current state of the art of our output devices, it makes perfect sense to perform as many ACR tweaks as possible if you convert directly into 8-bit.
