Have you calibrated ACR for your camera? (If you answered this earlier in the thread, I apologize for missing it.)
I also found that DPP and Capture One provided better color than ACR, until I calibrated it. It seems a bit strange that their profile looked better out of the box - perhaps the algorithm that ACR uses is more sensitive to individual variation for some reason.
Now, I still try Capture One, DPP, and RSE occasionally - I hear such good things about them - and for typical images, they provide reasonable results. However, for images that are difficult, typically because of awkward lighting, I've found that for my use they don't compare to ACR.
