No, they haven't; it was already split. You cannot color balance on a single axis. Nothing can. No digital camera does it and no software does it because it cannot happen. If you're not seeing that control in some particular software, like Nikon's, then they are hiding it from you and giving you less control over the color balance.
I think you just have a fundamental misunderstanding of what the white balance settings are doing and what they mean.
