For actual calibration purposes, I use Tom's script, because it simply automates what I previously did by hand. The script simply iterates through all the possible combinations of settings until by brute force it arrives at the ones that produce the closest match to the reference values. We tried using Linear, Medium Contrast, and a custom curve that set the gray patches to the reference values. Medium Contrast always seemed to work best, so that's what it uses.
