Subject: Re: ACR/Bridge won't open "camera raw image" NEFs but will open "camera raw" NEFs - what's the diff?
Mike - the images are all copied over using photomechanic.
DNG converter did not attempt to convert those Nikon D1x or D2x raw NEFs that were showing as 'camera raw image' in Bridge (the image sample on the right in the first post of this thread).
What I did manage to notice is that Bridge apparently labels the file type on the first pass based on file extension - /all/ NEF files are labeled 'camera raw image' as Bridge builds the cache for a given directory. Only later, as the thumbnails are rendered by Bridge to the slider-specified size, are the file type labels updated to 'camera raw' in the case where the images are thought be Bridge to be ACR-openable, and left marked 'camera raw image' when it cannot determine what's what.
Curiously the corrupted NEFs I have are from early D1x (firmware version shows 1.01) as well as memory-and-firmware-upgraded D1x (firmware shows 5.something), and the D2x with FCS firmware and the first update.
So I'm apparently stuck with some corrupted NEFs due to the vagaries of drive errors or other reasons. Such is life.
