Subject: RAW (NEF) to JPEG Queries in CS2

I shoot NEF files on my Nikon camera. I recently upgraded from PS7 to CS2 (both PC environment).

However, when I open my NEF files in PS7 (I do not have the $99 RAW Plug-in, just the basic NEF opener that only offers Exposure Compensation and White Balance adjustments) and then enhance the photos and save them as JPEG's, the file sizes are notably larger than when I open my NEF files in CS2 and perform the same RAW adjustments and enhancements before saving them as JPEG's.

For example:
- I am taking an NEF file that is 5.03 MB and opening it in PS7, leaving it unchanged/not performing any adjustments or enhancements, and then saving it as a JPEG and it becomes 3.24 MB.
- However, if I take the exact same 5.03 MB file and open it in CS2 and then leave it unchanged/do not perform any adjustments or enhancements and save it as a JPEG, it becomes 2.66 MB.

CS2 RAW plug-in is set at 3008 x 2000 (6.0 MP, 8 bits/channel, 300 pixels/inch. I understand that RAW files are better to work with because they provide users more flexibility after shooting, but I thought they also allowed users to produce higher-resolution enlargements, etc. Is this not the case? And does anyone know why CS2 produces smaller JPEG's than PS7? Or is my CS2 configured incorrectly? Any assistance or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much, Scott
