Subject: Opening NEF in ACR

Hello,

I'm somewhat new to this and have searched for the answer but have been unable to find it.

Here goes:

When I take a NEF/RAW image with my Nikon D70S, if I open it with Adobe PSE 4 open, I believe it opens the photo in ACR (3.2). Yet, in the lower left hand corner, it says it opened it in 8 bit/channel. If I switch from 8 bit/channel to 16 bit/channel, I get no change in the histogram or photo. How do I open with 16 bit/channel in PSE 4.0 to assure the least loss of image quality?
