What is missing from the description is that you must first Ungroup your rectangle so that it becomes an ordinary path.
Illustrator has no concept of special shapes like Rectangles, Polygons, etc. like Freehand does. The shape tools just create ordinary paths.
The benefit of Freehand's model is that you can adjust shape-specific attributes like corner roundness on rectangles or number of vertices on a polygon or inner radius depth on a star after the shapes are already made, instead of only during their initial creation.
The downside of Freehand's model is that an Ungroup step is required to "free" the anchor points and edges of the shape and allow them to be manipulated independently.
As a tradeoff, I prefer Freehand's treatment. But as a compromise, I could see it being made an option of the tool whether it would create constrained special shapes or unconstrained paths.
