I don't get the requests for merging the selection tools. If you want to use only one, then set your selection tool to the Direct Select tool, and you can access the functionality of the black selection tool by holding down the Cmd/Ctrl key, and you can access the functionality of the arrow-+ tool by holding down the Option/Alt key. The three tools are only on the tool box as a convenience, to free users from holding down modifier keys if they want to be using the same variant for a while and don't want to keep holding down the modifier key that accesses it from the other tools. If you prefer a modifier-centric approach, then work that way. Nobody is forcing you to switch tools. (Freehand has two pointer tools as well.)
I agree with James that Freehand's path manipulation with the Direct Select tool and the Pen tool is more flexible than Illustrator's. (There are lots of other more detailed threads on those issues.) But that isn't a matter of having fewer or more tools. It's just a matter of attaching better meanings to the gestures that you make with the tools you've got.
