Have you ever tried to grab the side of a box and drag it out without
moving the other sides of the box in FreeHand? Of course you haven't because
you can't, you have to select each point on that line then move both points.




Black pointer: Select the object.
AltClick a segment to subselect it.
Drag the selected segment.

Now let me ask you one, Rydog: In Illustrator, with any of its THREE pointers, how do you put a bend in one of the straight segments of that rectangle?
