Subject: I am not able to UNGROUP elements in Illustrator CS2

I "select all" and then select UNGROUP.

Then, when I go to: OBJECT > UNGROUP ...UNGROUP is now shaded as it should be.

Next, using the Selection tool I select any element in the illustration and every element lights up as if it was GROUPED. It acts as grouped images even though UNGROUPED remains shaded in the Objects Menu.

Can someone please tell me how to fix this nagging problem?

NOTE: I am running Mac OS X, and Illustrator CS2
