Subject: Convert to Grayscale

I am using Illustrator CS2. (and RGB JPG files).

I want to convert an RBG JPEG to greyscale in Illustrator. I am unable to do this because the convert to gray scale' function under Filter>Colors is 'greyed out'. I can not understand why.

Please if anyone knows what I'm doing wrong I'd love to know.
