Subject: Re: does anyone know ...
XMP isn't proprietary to Adobe and isn't tied to DNG - it is also used in TIF, JPEG and PSD (at least). Rather than losing the benefits of a common raw format, "private" tags can be added by anyone and can be read by anyone, if not necessarily understood. So Adobe are adding metadata for information such as lens info as well as processing info such as camera raw settings in DNGs, iView and IdImager are backing up application-specific data into the file so you can move/read the metadata in other programs, or guys like me are adding their own workflow specific tags in Bridge and reading them in Portfolio. Other raw processors could - if they wanted - write their processing instructions (more than one version) into the DNG file's metadata. It's such a flexible standard that we need to demand that imaging programs start fully supporting it.
