Subject: Re: When is the right time to convert to DNG
For me, DNG isn't another step, because I convert directly from the memory card, and conversion replaces the copy stage. But for others, it may be an extra step.
There are scripts available that may help some people. Some people run a script that copies and converts, while creating suitable folders, perhaps based on date.
For recent Canons and Nikons, the space saving is typically small. While for some other cameras, the DNG is less than half the size.
Perhaps the single most important reason to use DNG for many people is the ability to hold metadata in XMP format within the DNG itself. It is then preserved inside the file, and moved and archived with it.
It depends on your workflow and the tools you use. And the cost-benefit analysis changes every few months.
