As usual you said it better than I. However, when you discuss XMP metadata, do you mean to include ACR tonal adjustments? We have examined the need to have XMP metadata and their need in other topic threads. Here I am concerned about the tonal adjustments and other corrections available in the develop section of LR.
I have thought that the ACR adjustments I make to RAW files are distinct from XMP metadata. Perhaps more understanding will show me that they are one in the same.
Clearly the LR (as well as all Adobe photo platforms) need to be able to store and retrieve these data from all types of formats.
