Subject: Re: DNG does not work correctly with Aperture?
OK, now I understand. I think the first time I saw the term "edit list" with an explanation was when reading the NX reviews a couple of days ago. "List of image processor settings and edits in XMP (or whatever) format" - yup, that makes sense.
DNG can hold such a thing. It would be in the form of separate XMP namespaces. For example, ACR settings in a DNG file are in block "xmlns:crs", for "XML namespace - Camera Raw Settings". (Then there are others for EXIF, DC which I think may be Dublin Core, etc. But those are not really edits in this sense).
But - who/what would process all of those? At the moment, I understand that even ACR and Lightroom are inconsistent in their use of settings. (I think this will get sorted out). It would be necessary for one company's product to understand, and be able to process, the edits applied by a number of products. Or ...
Hm! How about Photoshop (or Lightroom) plugins, or additional panels, supplied by the various other companies, called in turn according to the edit-list, able to apply those changes in turn to the image just before it is used? So it would still be non-destructive editing.
You've triggered some thoughts that I wouldn't otherwise have had, so thanks.
