Well at least I know I'm not alone. Since I posted this I
have discovered something even more odd. The PC that
originally worked had an old Athlon 1.4GHz "Thunderbird"
processor. This was replaced with a Sempron 2600+
"Thoroughbred" simply to get SSE capability, no system
changes to either hardware or software. The problem started
sometime after that point, so just as a test I replaced the
original Athlon... you guessed it, it worked.

I just built a new PC from the ground up using the same
Sempron - new motherboard, RAM, hard disk, case...
everything. New clean XP Pro installation, all latest
patches and service packs applied, and... it behaves exactly
as it did in the old PC. The DNG converter will not work in
command line mode on the PC with the Sempron 2600+ CPU but
works fine on the exact same PC with an old Athlon fitted

Weirdness or what?
