Subject: NEF to DNG; D200; What am I losing in conversion?
I recently acquired a Nikon D200. Uncompressed RAW files from that camera (NEF files) are about 15-16 MB. When converted to DNG, however, they end up at around 8 or 9MB. While I love having smaller files, I have to wonder what I am losing in the conversion.
I used a D70 for about 2 years, and the DNG files created from the orginal NEF files from that camera are about the same size as the original NEF files. The D70, however, compresses its RAW files, while the D200 does not (unless I tell it to).
So, when I convert an uncompressed NEF file from the D200 to a DNG file that is significantly smaller, what am I losing? Is DNG compressing the file? Is it throwing out proprietary Nikon information that it cannot read?
