Subject: An interesting Pentax announcement!
I expect people who look at this forum typically want cameras to use DNG as their native raw formats, or at least output it as an option. So far, I know of 3 cameras & 4 digital backs that do so.
But there is another possible trend becoming visible - out-of-camera software supplied by camera manufacturers that converts their native raw formats to DNG. Perhaps this is their first step towards the target?
PENTAX ANNOUNCES K100D DIGITAL SLR ... (May 22, 2006 ):
"The K100D's standard software package consists of ... the PENTAX PHOTO Browser 3 that ... can convert RAW images to the DNG format".
Although Hassleblad-Imacon support in-camera DNG for some of their cameras/backs, they use out-of-camera software to convert to DNG for others.
And recently Canon Consumer Imaging Group Director Chuck Westfall made it clear that Canon intended to keep its RAW data recording methods proprietary, but added that Canon might consider the possibility of adding DNG support in future versions of RAW image conversion software:
There is a tendency to assume that DNG Converters are things that Adobe are responsible for. But specialised DNG Converters, such as Hassleblad-Imacon's, can satisfy some needs. There are even "amateur" DNG Converters that convert the native raw files of cameras that are not even supposed to have raw capability! For example, SMaL2DNG: "SMAL2DNG.exe is a command line program which will convert SMaL RAW files to *.dng file format".
